Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin lost his cool during a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2025 clash between Dindigul Dragons and IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans on Sunday.
Leading Dindigul in the ongoing TNPL season, Ashwin opened the innings but was dismissed for just 18 runs by Tiruppur’s captain R Sai Kishore. The controversial moment came in the fifth over when Ashwin was adjudged LBW. Convinced the ball pitched outside leg-stump, Ashwin walked straight to the female umpire, engaged in a heated discussion, and then hit his pad angrily with his bat while returning to the pavilion.
The dismissal was a key blow as Dindigul were bowled out for just 93 in 16.2 overs. Tiruppur chased down the target in dominant fashion, winning by 9 wickets with 49 balls to spare, thanks to Tushar Raheja’s unbeaten 65.
Poor IPL, Poor TNPL Start for Ashwin
This outburst follows Ashwin’s underwhelming IPL 2025 campaign with Chennai Super Kings, where he managed only 7 wickets in 9 matches and was dropped from the playing XI multiple times. At 38, the veteran all-rounder’s future in franchise cricket looks uncertain, especially after his emotional retirement from international cricket last December during the Test series against Australia.
Despite being India’s second-highest Test wicket-taker with 537 scalps, Ashwin’s recent form has sparked speculation that CSK might release him ahead of next season.
