Veteran Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has landed in hot water after an angry outburst during a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) match on June 8. The Dindigul Dragons skipper was fined 30% of his match fee for showing dissent towards umpires and misusing equipment, following his controversial LBW dismissal against Tiruppur Tamizhans.
Ashwin’s Frustration Boils Over
Ashwin was adjudged LBW by umpire Kritika in the fifth over while trying to sweep a delivery from Sai Kishore. With Dindigul having no reviews left, Ashwin couldn’t challenge the call. Believing the ball had pitched outside leg stump, he walked up to the umpire, argued, and demanded an explanation.
On his way back, the 38-year-old slammed his bat on his pads, threw his gloves into the air near the dugout, and continued to express anger using hand gestures and shouts from the sidelines. The match referee, Arjun Kripal Singh, found Ashwin guilty of two breaches:
- 10% fine for dissent
- 20% fine for equipment misuse
“Ashwin accepted the sanctions,” a TNPL official confirmed.
Dindigul Collapse, Tiruppur Cruise
Ashwin started strong with 18 off 11 balls, but his dismissal at 39/1 led to a shocking collapse. Dindigul were bowled out for 93 in 16.2 overs, with only three batters reaching double digits. Tiruppur’s Tushar Raheja made an unbeaten 65 as they chased the target down in just 11.5 overs, winning by 9 wickets.
Esakkimuthu led the bowling attack with 4 wickets, while Sai Kishore picked up 2. Dindigul, with one win and one loss, now sit 5th on the TNPL 2025 points table.
A Rough Patch for Ashwin
This comes after a poor IPL 2025 season for Ashwin with Chennai Super Kings, where he picked just 7 wickets in 9 matches and was dropped from the playing XI multiple times.
The TNPL 2025 is currently in its 9th edition, running from June 6 to July 6.
