Ashwin’s revelation sparks salary cap debate

CSK under scanner for Dewald Brevis salary deal

The Chennai Super Kings’ signing of Dewald Brevis has come under the spotlight after Ravichandran Ashwin revealed the South African had negotiated for a higher pay than initially offered. Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has questioned whether the franchise exploited a loophole in the IPL purse rules while signing him as a mid-season injury replacement.

How Brevis joined CSK mid-season

Brevis went unsold at the mega auction despite a base price of INR 75 lakh. He was later added to the Registered Available Player Pool (RAPP), making him eligible for replacement signings. CSK brought him in to replace injured pacer Gurjapneet Singh, whose contract was worth INR 2.20 crore.

Chopra explains pro-rata salary rules

Speaking on his YouTube show, Aakash Chopra broke down the pro-rata salary system. He explained that a replacement player’s pay cannot be lower than their base price and cannot exceed the original player’s contract value. Since Brevis joined mid-season, his salary would be between INR 75 lakh and INR 1.10 crore, half of Gurjapneet’s fee for the remainder of the season.

Questions over potential purse breach

Chopra suggested that if CSK agreed to pay Brevis more than the upper limit of INR 2.20 crore annually (or its pro-rated portion), it could indicate an exploitation of the system. He hinted that if such a deal was structured with future considerations, it might open the door to bending the purse rules.
