Experts Question Axar’s Call to Bowl Mukesh Over Starc
Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Axar Patel has earned praise this season for his leadership, but during DC’s crucial IPL 2025 clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), his decision-making at the death has come under scrutiny. With 17 runs needed off the final two overs, Axar handed the 19th over to Mukesh Kumar instead of star pacer Mitchell Starc – a move that raised eyebrows among cricket experts.
Former India captain Anil Kumble, speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show, expressed surprise over Axar’s decision.
“When you have 18-19 runs to defend, you give the 19th over to your best bowler. The intent was wrong,” Kumble said, hinting that Starc should have bowled the penultimate over.
Bangar and Jaffer Also Weigh In
Sanjay Bangar suggested that Axar may have been influenced by Starc’s recent success, particularly his match-winning final over against Rajasthan Royals, but stressed that the best bowler should always be trusted earlier.
“It might have worked, but the thought process was wrong,” Bangar stated. “Spinners sometimes create magical moments if needed in the last over.”
Wasim Jaffer added that Axar’s lack of trust in youngster Vipraj Nigam, who has performed decently this season, could have cost DC a chance to squeeze RCB.
“Maybe Vipraj could have been given two-three overs earlier. Two overseas batters would have been under pressure then,” Jaffer explained.
Where DC Stand Now
Despite the loss, Delhi Capitals remain fourth on the points table with six wins from nine games. Their upcoming matches against Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Punjab Kings offer a chance to strengthen their playoff hopes before they face tougher opponents like Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans.
With every match critical now, Axar’s tactical decisions will be under even greater scrutiny as DC push for a top-four finish.
