Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined ₹12 lakh by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after his team was found guilty of maintaining a slow over rate during their IPL 2025 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The fine came after PBKS’ slow over rate during the match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday, which fell under the breach of the IPL Code of Conduct.
Slow Over Rate Results in ₹12 Lakh Fine for Iyer
The BCCI announced that as this was PBKS’ first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which addresses minimum over-rate violations, Shreyas Iyer would be fined ₹12 lakh. “Shreyas Iyer, Captain, Punjab Kings has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 49 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Chennai Super Kings,” stated the BCCI in a release.
Iyer’s fine, however, comes with no demerit points, and as the team won the match, it is unlikely to cause him much concern. PBKS triumphed over CSK comfortably, with Iyer contributing a blistering 72 runs off 41 balls to lead his side to victory.
PBKS’ Victory and Iyer’s Contribution
Despite the fine, PBKS had much to celebrate as they won the match with two balls to spare, chasing down CSK’s total of 190. Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh played key roles, with Iyer scoring 72 off 41 balls, including 5 fours and 4 sixes. Prabhsimran supported with a well-crafted 54 from 36 balls. The pair formed a vital 72-run partnership for the second wicket, setting up a strong foundation for the chase.
The victory was made even more impressive by a standout performance from Yuzvendra Chahal, who claimed 4 wickets for 32 runs, including a hat-trick. His exceptional bowling helped dismiss CSK for 190. Although PBKS stumbled a bit towards the end of their chase, they ultimately sealed the win, scoring 194/6.
CSK’s Struggles and PBKS’ Playoff Hopes
While PBKS moved up to second place on the points table with 13 points, CSK continued to struggle, remaining in 10th place with just four points. This loss effectively eliminated CSK’s already slim playoff hopes for IPL 2025.
Iyer’s performance with the bat was instrumental in PBKS’ victory. He faced pressure from CSK’s bowlers but countered it effectively by rotating the strike and hitting the boundaries when needed. His aggressive 20-run assault off Matheesha Pathirana in the 17th over, including two sixes and a four, effectively shut the door on CSK’s chances, despite a few late wickets.
