Cameron Green Embraces New Role as Specialist Batter Ahead of Test Return

Cameron Green Set for No.3 Test Role After Injury

Cameron Green is set to make his return to Australia’s Test side with a renewed focus—batting. After undergoing back surgery in October, which ruled him out of the entire home season, Green has used the downtime to fine-tune his batting, scoring three centuries for Gloucestershire in county cricket. With his bowling temporarily sidelined, the 25-year-old is embracing the simplicity of being “just a batter.”

“It’s nice to just focus on one discipline. There’s so much more relaxation when you don’t have to prepare for both bowling and batting,” Green admitted.

Green, who has a history of back injuries, opted for surgery instead of waiting months for natural healing. Encouragement from players like Jasprit Bumrah, Jason Behrendorff, and Ben Dwarshuis helped him make a confident decision.

No.3 Role Beckons as Green Prepares for England Conditions

As Australia reshuffles its Test batting order, Green is likely to take the No.3 spot, with Steve Smith returning to his usual position at No.4. Despite limited experience at No.3 in first-class cricket, Green is unfazed.

“I batted at No.3 my whole junior career. It’s not unfamiliar territory,” he said.

His stint at Gloucestershire, funded by a private benefactor, has proven instrumental in preparing for English conditions, especially after a modest Ashes campaign last year (134 runs at 19.14). Green now feels better equipped to succeed, noting how English batting strategies differ from Australia.

“It’s the most prepared I’ve been for English conditions. Defending straight and scoring square—those lessons are invaluable,” he added.

Long-Term Allrounder Role Still in Sight

Though Green is relishing life as a pure batter, his allrounder status isn’t gone for good. Once fully fit, his return as a bowler could challenge Beau Webster’s place at No.6—unless the team finds a way to include both players.

Western Australia coach Beau Casson believes Green is mentally and technically ready to shine.

“He’s versatile and smart about his game. His technique allows him to adapt and dominate,” Casson said.

Webster, meanwhile, hopes they can co-exist in the same XI.

“He’s a rare talent. I just hope he nails the top-order spot so I can focus on No.6,” Webster remarked.
