With just three wins in 13 matches, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are staring at their worst-ever finish in IPL 2025, prompting calls for a major overhaul. As fans wonder about the future of MS Dhoni, cricket experts like Sanjay Bangar, Aakash Chopra, and Stephen Fleming have weighed in on the franchise’s current state and what’s next.
Bangar believes it’s time for Dhoni to step away, saying the team’s transition will naturally happen even in his absence.
“At 43, it’s tough to stay competitive. If I were Dhoni, I’d say, ‘enough.’ The franchise will evolve with or without me,” said Bangar.
Chopra: Release Seven Players, Rebuild Around Youth
Former cricketer Aakash Chopra went a step further, suggesting seven players be released, including Ashwin, Jadeja, Devon Conway, and Tripathi. He criticized CSK’s current top order as a “stopgap arrangement” and proposed a rebuild with fresh faces like Dewald Brevis and Urvil Patel.
“This isn’t your future one-two-three. Let go of Conway, bring in a top-order destructor,” Chopra said.
Chopra also questioned Jadeja’s role at No. 4, advocating for Brevis to take that spot instead and calling for better balance between overseas players and Indian talent.
Stephen Fleming Admits CSK “Patching Innings Up”
CSK head coach Stephen Fleming admitted after their recent loss to Rajasthan Royals that the batting line-up has been unsettled all season.
“Our order is not right… we’ve just been patching innings up rather than constructing proper ones,” Fleming said.
He pointed out that the early injury to captain Ruturaj Gaikwad derailed their plans, and underperforming batters failed to step up. Fleming also promised “strong ideas for next year,” hinting at a significant shakeup during the off-season.
What Lies Ahead for CSK in 2026?
Between Dhoni’s possible retirement, Chopra’s release list, and Fleming’s candid admission, it’s clear that CSK is heading toward a transition phase. With young talents like Ayush Mhatre and Brevis showing potential, the franchise could rebuild around them, while veterans may move on.
Whether Dhoni calls time on his career or stays on in a non-playing role, IPL 2026 may mark the beginning of a new CSK era—one built on change, clarity, and consistency.
