Gautam Gambhir is set to become one of the rare head coaches in Indian cricket history to enjoy more power than the captain. With Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin stepping away from Test cricket, Gambhir now has the space and authority to reshape the team on his terms.
No More Star Culture in Indian Cricket
According to a report by PTI, Gambhir was clear from the start: the era of star power in Indian cricket needs to end. He has already begun taking strategic steps toward a younger squad, in line with chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Both believe fresh faces must take over in the next World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
A BCCI insider said, “Everyone knew where Gambhir stood when it came to retaining seniors. His views matched those of the selectors.”
This transition marks a shift from the past when coaches like Anil Kumble and Greg Chappell clashed with high-profile players and eventually lost influence. Coaches like Gary Kirsten and John Wright succeeded by playing second fiddle to captains. Gambhir, however, is rewriting that script.
Young Leadership, Total Control
With Shubman Gill expected to lead India in red-ball cricket, Gambhir gets a captain who is still growing into his role. This gives the coach more say in strategic matters — at least for now. Jasprit Bumrah, the only player with potential leadership influence, is reportedly limited by recurring fitness issues.
For the first time, a coach has been able to phase out megastars without resistance. Gambhir now holds command over team selections and tactical decisions, especially in Tests and T20Is. However, the ODI format may still pose challenges, as both Rohit and Kohli aim to continue till the 2027 World Cup.
A Double-Edged Sword
While Gambhir’s position gives him unmatched authority, it also comes with the pressure of delivering results. The BCCI has empowered him to avoid repeats of recent failures like the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the New Zealand series at home.
As the Indian team enters a new era, Gambhir will be at the center of its transformation — with more power than any Indian coach before him, and the responsibility to reshape its legacy.
