Gavaskar Warns Gambhir Against Using Bronco Test

Gavaskar questions Bronco Test for team selection

Sunil Gavaskar has voiced strong opposition to the use of the Bronco Test as a selection criterion for India’s senior men’s cricket team. Writing in his column, the former captain said the test is too rigid and doesn’t account for the unique physical demands of different player roles.

“No One-Size-Fits-All in Cricket”

Sunil Gavaskar emphasized that wicketkeepers, fast bowlers, spinners, and batters all require different fitness levels. He argued that applying a single benchmark like the Bronco Test ignores these variations and could unfairly exclude talented players who don’t fit the mold.

Gambhir’s Coaching Approach Under Scrutiny

The Bronco Test was introduced under India’s new strength and conditioning coach Adrian Le Roux, with support from head coach Gautam Gambhir. Gavaskar cautioned Gambhir not to rely solely on such tests, urging him to prioritize cricketing skill and passion over endurance drills.

Selection Must Reflect Cricketing Heart

Gavaskar concluded by saying the most important test for playing at the highest level isn’t physical—it’s emotional. “When the heart opens, it should have only two words: Indian cricket,” he wrote, stressing that desire and commitment should outweigh fitness metrics
