Australian cricket star Glenn Maxwell has officially retired from One Day Internationals (ODIs), ending a dynamic career that spanned 149 matches and included two World Cup titles. The 36-year-old confirmed his decision on a podcast, citing his body’s inability to endure the format after years of injury struggles.
Despite stepping away from ODIs, Maxwell remains available for T20 Internationals and is expected to play a crucial role in Australia’s 2026 T20 World Cup campaign.
A Trailblazing Career Filled with Records
Maxwell retires with 3,990 ODI runs at a strike rate of 126.70—second only to Andre Russell in the format’s history. His unforgettable 201 vs Afghanistan* in the 2023 World Cup, the first double century in a chase and from No. 6, remains one of the greatest knocks in cricket history.
He also holds the record for the fastest ODI World Cup century (40 balls vs Netherlands) and was instrumental in Australia’s 2015 and 2023 World Cup victories with both bat and ball.
Still a Match-Winner in T20s
Cricket Australia and selectors have confirmed Maxwell’s T20 career is far from over. With his explosive batting, reliable off-spin, and outstanding fielding, he is expected to be a pivotal player in the build-up to the next T20 World Cup.
Maxwell will also be part of the Major League Cricket tournament in the US and the upcoming T20 tour of the Caribbean.
