In a remarkable IPL 2025 match, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi made history by becoming the youngest batter to score a T20 century, leading Rajasthan Royals (RR) to an eight-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans (GT). Suryavanshi’s 35-ball century shattered records and earned him the title of the fastest-ever Indian to score a hundred in IPL history. West Indies legend Ian Bishop, witnessing the youngster’s explosive performance, was reminded of a young Sachin Tendulkar and shared a personal anecdote that connected the two.
Bishop Recalls an Unforgettable Encounter with Young Sachin
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo after Suryavanshi’s game-changing knock at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Bishop recounted an unheard story about facing Sachin Tendulkar as a teenager. In a 1990 tour match between India and Derbyshire, Bishop was left stunned by a 17-year-old Tendulkar, who faced him in a test match. The young Sachin, batting in challenging conditions on a bouncy Chesterfield pitch, turned the game around with a powerful six off Bishop’s back-of-the-length delivery. The ball sailed over deep mid-wicket, leaving Bishop astonished at being hit so far.
“I was playing for Derbyshire, and we were in the game until this little kid came in,” Bishop recalled. “I thought we had it sewn up. But then he hit me into a tree. I’ve never been hit that far before. Sachin Tendulkar, age 17, shocked the living daylights out of me,” he said.
Despite not many Indian batters crossing 35 runs, Tendulkar went on to score an unbeaten 105, leading India to a thrilling two-wicket victory.
Parallels Between Suryavanshi and Tendulkar
Bishop drew comparisons between Suryavanshi and a young Sachin, noting that the 14-year-old’s fearless approach against world-class bowlers like Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, and Rashid Khan must have left them equally stunned. “This kid is even younger, and he’s taking on world-class bowlers. That must have shocked the living daylights out of them,” Bishop remarked.
Suryavanshi’s 35-ball century against seasoned bowlers was nothing short of extraordinary. His blistering batting display included three sixes and two fours off Ishant Sharma, two sixes and a four off Washington Sundar, and a flurry of boundaries against Afghanistan’s Karim Janat and Rashid Khan. The young batter’s quickfire 50 off 17 balls set the stage for his record-breaking century, which left fans and cricketing legends in awe.
Sachin Tendulkar Also Impressed by Suryavanshi
Even Sachin Tendulkar himself was impressed by Suryavanshi’s performance, taking to Twitter to praise the teenager’s fearless batting. “Vaibhav’s fearless approach, bat speed, picking the length early, and transferring the energy behind the ball was the recipe behind a fabulous innings. End result: 101 runs off 38 balls. Well played!!” Tendulkar tweeted.
