The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended USA Cricket effective September 23, 2025, citing “repeated and continued breaches” of membership obligations. This unprecedented step arrives at a pivotal time, with cricket preparing for its return at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
Why ICC Took Action Against USA Cricket
According to the ICC, the suspension stems from three major shortcomings. The board failed to establish a reliable governance model, showed little progress toward recognition by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) as cricket’s official National Governing Body, and engaged in activities that hurt the sport’s image at home and abroad.
This outcome had been looming for some time. Back in July 2024, the ICC placed USA Cricket “on notice” for a year to fix compliance issues. When problems persisted, suspension was confirmed at the 2025 Annual General Meeting.
ICC Standards and USA Cricket’s Shortcomings
ICC membership rules emphasize strong governance, adherence to statutes, and — in the US context — demonstrable steps toward the Olympic pathway through USOPC recognition. Interestingly, USA Cricket’s own constitution requires the organization to pursue and maintain this recognition in line with the US Sports Act.
These standards include financial discipline, athlete participation in decision-making, fair election procedures, and safeguards for due process. Despite these clear commitments, USA Cricket consistently failed to deliver.
The Road Back for USA Cricket
The ICC has set up a normalization framework to monitor and guide recovery. To regain full membership, USA Cricket will need to revamp its governance practices, conduct credible elections, and prove compliance sufficient for USOPC recognition. No deadline has been fixed, and reinstatement will depend on visible reforms.
Safeguards for Players and Teams
The ICC has clarified that the suspension will not penalize players. USA’s men’s and women’s teams remain eligible for ICC competitions, and preparations for the LA28 Olympics will continue. High-performance programs and team management will be run under ICC supervision to ensure athletes are protected and momentum is not lost.
