Australia tightened their grip on the World Test Championship Final 2025 by the end of Day 2 at Lord’s, leading South Africa by 218 runs despite a tense passage of play. After being bowled out for 212 in their first innings, the Aussies struck back hard, skittling the Proteas for just 138 before ending the day at 144/8 in their second innings.
Cummins Calm Despite Late-Order Collapse
Speaking after stumps, captain Pat Cummins shared his satisfaction with the situation, despite losing quick wickets in the final session.
“Initially, when I walked out, anything over 200 would’ve been good. Happy we got past that. Hopefully, we add another 20-30 in the morning,” Cummins told reporters.
He added that the extended lead would offer more freedom with field placements and aggressive bowling tactics going into Day 3.
Carey-Starc Rescue and Proteas Comeback
The 61-run partnership between Alex Carey (43) and Mitchell Starc brought stability to a faltering Aussie innings. Starc remained unbeaten as Australia ended Day 2 with two wickets in hand.
Cummins acknowledged South Africa’s resistance, stating:
“It’s still pretty difficult out there… the pitch has just enough in it to keep both teams on edge.”
Game Set for Day 3 Finish?
With a tricky Lord’s pitch and disciplined bowling from both sides, Cummins believes the match might wrap up on Day 3:
“You’d imagine it’s set up for a Day 3 finish. We’ll have to bowl really well in the fourth innings.”
Lord’s Surface a Constant Threat
On the pitch, Cummins commented:
“Just when it feels like it’s doing nothing, one ball seams drastically. It’s a tough wicket. Both teams bowled tight lines without giving away many freebies.”
With the match delicately poised, Australia hold the upper hand, but the Proteas’ pace attack could still spark a turnaround if early wickets fall on Day 3.
