IPL 2025: MS Dhoni’s Heroics Go in Vain as CSK Lose to Punjab Kings; Experts Slam CSK’s Batting Strategy

Dhoni’s Fireworks Not Enough as CSK Fall Again in IPL 2025

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered their fourth consecutive defeat in IPL 2025, falling 18 runs short in a high-scoring thriller against Punjab Kings. While the match featured a nostalgic power-hitting display by MS Dhoni, his late entry couldn’t rescue CSK’s struggling chase.

Dhoni’s Blistering Cameo at No. 5 Too Late to Save CSK

The 42-year-old legend walked in at No. 5, his highest position this season, with 69 runs needed off 25 balls. Dhoni turned back the clock with a blazing 27 off just 12 balls, smashing three sixes and a boundary. His innings sparked brief hope, but it wasn’t enough to chase down Punjab’s target of 219.

What’s frustrating for fans and cricket experts alike is that Dhoni hit three sixes in 12 balls, while the rest of the CSK team combined had only five sixes in the entire innings.

Experts Question CSK’s Tactical Decisions

Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull, speaking on Cricbuzz, pointed out that Dhoni should have batted earlier. He stressed that if Dhoni had walked in at No. 4, the result could’ve been different.

“Dhoni had three sixes in 12 balls. The rest of the team had five in total. That tells you he’s still got the ability. A 27 off 12 when they were just two down could’ve made a big difference,” said Doull.

Conway’s Slow Knock Under the Microscope

While Devon Conway top-scored for CSK with 69 off 49 balls, his inability to accelerate in the middle overs drew criticism. With a required strike rate nearing 190, Conway struck at just 140 before being controversially retired out late in the innings.

Doull said the decision to retire Conway was made too late, and it gave Ravindra Jadeja little time to adjust and contribute effectively.

“Conway had the pace of the pitch, but the strike rate wasn’t enough. Retiring him out came too late – too late for Jadeja to assess the situation.”

What This Means for CSK

This loss adds pressure to CSK’s campaign, now sliding further down the points table. With experienced players like Dhoni showing they still have match-winning abilities, fans and experts are urging the team management to rethink their batting order and decision-making strategy.

As CSK look to bounce back in upcoming matches, the spotlight remains on how they use Dhoni – not just as a finisher, but as a key player who can shift momentum early.
