As the debate around MS Dhoni’s retirement from the IPL gains momentum, Ricky Ponting — former Australia captain and current Punjab Kings head coach — has stepped in to back the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend. While fans and experts have started questioning Dhoni’s role and future in the IPL, Ponting’s verdict is clear: Don’t write off Dhoni just yet.
Dhoni Faces Unfamiliar Criticism in IPL 2025
For the first time in his glorious IPL career, Dhoni is facing genuine criticism — not just from analysts, but from a section of CSK fans as well. With Dhoni now 43 years old and playing a reduced batting role, questions are being raised about whether this season will be his last.
However, Ponting disagrees with the chatter, calling it “dangerous” to count Dhoni out — especially when he continues to deliver as a top-class wicketkeeper and remains capable of finishing games.
Ponting on Dhoni: “Still As Good As Ever”
In a recent interview with The Indian Express, Ponting gave his honest view on the MS Dhoni retirement talks:
“His keeping is not getting any worse. He’s not missing much, even while standing up to the stumps against spinners. He’s still as sharp as ever behind the wickets.”
He added that CSK, known for their strategic decisions and success, have good reason for how they use Dhoni:
“With the Impact Player Rule, Dhoni now bats after serious ball strikers. He’s been playing a diminished but impactful role — coming in for the last 10-12 balls to finish the innings.”
Should Dhoni Retire? Ponting Shares His Take
When asked if 2025 will be Dhoni’s final IPL season, Ponting made it clear that the decision will depend solely on Dhoni’s performance with the bat:
“If he can have a real impact with the bat, he will keep playing. If his output drops, he might start thinking about retirement. But he’s been a terrific player for a long time, and you don’t argue with what CSK does.”
