Ishan Kishan’s ‘Brain Fade’ Moment: Sehwag and Sidhu React

Sehwag and Sidhu React to Ishan Kishan’s Bizarre Dismissal

Ishan Kishan’s bizarre dismissal during Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) match against Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2025 has sparked debate among former cricketers, with Virender Sehwag and Navjot Singh Sidhu offering their contrasting views on the incident.

The Sunrisers were already struggling in the match, and the dismissal only added to their woes. The incident took place on the first ball of the third over of SRH’s innings when Ishan Kishan attempted to glance a leg-side delivery from Deepak Chahar. He failed to make proper contact, and shockingly, without any appeal from the MI players, Ishan began walking off the field. Wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton, who had easily collected the ball, didn’t seem sure about whether to appeal for caught behind, while both Chahar and MI captain Hardik Pandya appeared more concerned with the umpire signaling the delivery as a wide.

In a confusing turn of events, umpire Vinod Seshan initially called the delivery a wide but changed his mind after seeing Ishan walk off, raising his finger to signal the dismissal. This moment left many scratching their heads, especially after the replays showed no spike on UltraEdge, confirming that Ishan hadn’t made contact with the ball.

Sidhu Blames the Umpire

Navjot Singh Sidhu criticized the umpire’s decision to give Ishan out despite there being no appeal from the fielding team. In a tweet, Sidhu expressed his frustration, saying, “Buying trouble is as easy as pie, but the carrying charges run pretty high … have you ever seen an umpire rule someone out without an appeal?” Sidhu’s comments highlight the confusion around the decision, where the umpire seemed to act impulsively based on Ishan’s walk-off rather than any clear evidence.

Sehwag Calls it a “Brain Fade”

Virender Sehwag, known for his sharp and unfiltered opinions, questioned Ishan Kishan’s decision to walk off without waiting for the umpire’s call. Sehwag described the incident as a “brain fade” and emphasized that Ishan should have waited for the umpire to make the final decision. “Ruk toh jaa. Umpire bhi paise le rahe hai (Stop at least and wait for the umpire to make his decision. He is also charging some amount of money for his job). Let him do his work,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz. He further added that had Ishan waited, MI would have likely opted for a review, which could have confirmed that he wasn’t out.

Sehwag also reminded viewers that it wasn’t Ishan’s responsibility to decide whether he was out or not. “Had it been an edge, it would have been understandable because that would be in the spirit of the game. But it was neither out, the umpire was unsure, and you started walking off all of a sudden. Then even the umpire is in a dilemma,” Sehwag added.

Ishan Kishan’s Ongoing Struggles in IPL 2025

Ishan’s dismissal further highlighted his ongoing struggles in IPL 2025. Since his stunning century in the season opener against Rajasthan Royals, the SRH batter has been in poor form, scoring just 33 runs in his next seven innings at an average of 5.5.

The bizarre dismissal has only added to his frustration, with Ishan seen cursing himself in the dressing room after watching the replays. SRH, already at the bottom of the table, now faces an uphill battle to turn their season around.
