In a dramatic turn of events during IPL 2025, Ishan Kishan’s dismissal has raised eyebrows and sparked controversy. The incident unfolded during the match between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Ishan Kishan found himself at the center of a highly unusual dismissal that left fans and experts questioning whether the umpire followed the proper procedures.
The Incident: A Shocking Decision
Ishan Kishan was facing Deepak Chahar when he attempted to glance a delivery sliding down the leg side. Wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton collected the ball cleanly, but, surprisingly, neither he nor Chahar appealed for a dismissal. In fact, the on-field umpire, Vinod Seshan, appeared to be ready to signal it as a wide delivery.
But in a bizarre twist, Ishan Kishan started walking off the field, seemingly implying that he had edged the ball, even though there was no visible appeal. Seeing Ishan walking off, the umpire, instead of sticking to his original decision of calling a wide or checking for a possible edge, quickly raised his finger and declared Ishan out.
What Does the Law Say?
The controversy deepened when replays were shown. The UltraEdge technology revealed no spike or deviation, clearly indicating that Ishan Kishan had not touched the ball. This raised significant concerns, especially as the batter had walked off without any formal appeal from the fielding team.
According to the MCC’s Law 31.7, umpires are allowed to intervene if a batter walks off under the “misapprehension of being out.” The law states that if the umpire believes the batter has left the wicket under such a misunderstanding, the umpire can call “Dead ball” and recall the batter. This intervention can occur until the next delivery, unless it is the final dismissal of the innings.
In Ishan’s case, the umpire did not intervene to review or reconsider the situation, despite clear evidence that no edge had occurred. This led to widespread criticism from former cricketers, who questioned both Ishan’s decision to walk off and the umpire’s failure to use the available technology like DRS.
The Fallout from the Incident
The dismissal came at a crucial time for SRH, who were already struggling with the loss of Travis Head early in the innings. Ishan’s walk-off triggered a collapse, leaving SRH in a difficult position at 13/4 within just 4.1 overs.
However, Heinrich Klaasen stepped up with a brilliant knock of 71 off 44 balls, alongside Abhinav Manohar (43 off 37 balls), to stabilize the innings and help SRH post a competitive total of 143/8 in their allotted 20 overs.
