Jaiswal backs Shubman Gill’s leadership after Bumrah call sparks criticism

Jaiswal backs Gill’s captaincy after Bumrah debate

Yashasvi Jaiswal has come out in strong support of Shubman Gill’s leadership and batting brilliance following India’s solid Day 1 performance in the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Gill, who is leading India in the ongoing series, struck an unbeaten century (114*) to guide the visitors to a commanding position. Jaiswal also played a crucial knock of 87, helping India recover from an early wobble.

The pair added a 66-run stand for the third wicket after early dismissals of KL Rahul and Karun Nair, stabilizing the innings and ensuring momentum stayed with India. Speaking at the post-day press conference, Jaiswal was full of praise for Gill’s clear approach and strong mindset, both as a batter and as a captain.

“I think he’s been amazing the way he’s batting. It’s just incredible to see him bat and as a captain, also, he’s been amazing. I think he’s very clear in his head what he needs to do with the team, and we are very confident what we are going to do,” said Jaiswal.

India made three changes for the second Test, including resting Jasprit Bumrah as part of workload management. This decision drew criticism from former players like Ravi Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar, especially with India trailing 0-1 in the series.

However, Jaiswal maintained that there was no confusion in the squad about the changes. “No, there is no confusion,” he said firmly.

He also reflected on his own innings, expressing disappointment about missing out on a century but showing maturity in focusing on continuous learning.

“It is disappointing to get out like that but it is part of the game. I want to enjoy the game and also try to find a solution in such situations. Plans are always in the mind,” added Jaiswal.

India ended Day 1 on a high, showing renewed intent under Gill’s captaincy and setting up an intriguing contest in the days to come.
