Jason Gillespie Accuses PCB of Withholding Full Remuneration for Head Coach Role

Jason Gillespie Accuses PCB of Withholding Full Pay for Head Coach Role

Former Pakistan head coach Jason Gillespie has accused the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) of not paying him in full for his role with the men’s cricket team. Gillespie, who took on the red-ball coaching role in April 2024, stepped down in December 2024 following Pakistan’s poor performance, particularly their disappointing series against Bangladesh at home.

In an interview with PakPassion, Gillespie expressed his frustration about the situation. “Yes, without going into details. I’m still waiting on some remuneration for work that’s been done. I’ll just navigate through that in due course,” said Gillespie. He further added, “Admittedly, that’s been a little bit disappointing, but hopefully, that can get sorted sooner rather than later. But yes, we’ll learn. Hopefully, it’ll get sorted as soon as possible.”

Challenges Faced During Gillespie’s Tenure as Head Coach

Despite being a well-respected figure in cricket, Gillespie faced several challenges during his time with the Pakistan cricket team. He described feeling blindsided at times, particularly when he was left in the dark about important decisions made by the PCB.

“There were certainly challenges. I went into the job with my eyes wide open. Pakistan had cycled through a number of coaches in a short period,” said Gillespie, acknowledging the difficulties of coaching a team in flux. One of the major disappointments for him came when Pakistan let go of their high-performance coach, Tim Nielsen, without informing him.

“The straw that broke the camel’s back was the decision to let go of Tim Nielsen. I had absolutely zero communication about that. It made me question whether they really wanted me to do this job,” Gillespie revealed.

Pakistan’s Struggles Under Gillespie’s Leadership

During Gillespie’s tenure, Pakistan struggled to make it to the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final, under the leadership of Shan Masood. Key players like Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, and Naseem Shah were rested or dropped for the Test series against England, a decision that raised many eyebrows.

Gillespie’s Departure and Pakistan’s Ongoing Struggles

After Gillespie’s departure, Aqib Javed was named the interim head coach for the South Africa tour. However, under Javed, Pakistan continued to struggle. The team lost the Test series in South Africa and faced an early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, despite being co-hosts. Following this, several changes in the team’s leadership and player selection were made, including the dropping of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan from the T20I side.

Despite the shake-ups, Pakistan’s performance continued to falter with a whitewash in the ODI series and a loss in the T20I series against New Zealand.
