Kagiso Rabada on Drug Ban: ‘I’m Sorry, But I Won’t Be Mr-I-Apologise’

Rabada Speaks on Drug Ban ‘Not Mr-I-Apologise’

South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has spoken publicly for the first time since serving a one-month suspension for testing positive for a recreational drug during the SA20 League in January 2025. Ahead of South Africa’s World Test Championship (WTC) final preparations, Rabada said he’s had conversations with teammates and intends to move forward — without over-apologizing.

Rabada Breaks Silence Before WTC Final

Rabada, who had left the IPL 2025 citing “personal reasons,” revealed that returning home and accepting responsibility was the right call. “I could have contested it, but coming home was the best decision,” he told reporters before departing for London.

Without disclosing the substance involved — which fell under cannabis, cocaine, heroin, or ecstasy as per the South African Institute of Drug-Free Sport — Rabada said the incident sparked a period of reflection and gratitude.

‘Not Ideal, But I Took Accountability’

“I’ve already spoken to my teammates,” Rabada said, adding, “I owe it to them. We’ve come so far together.” Though he apologized in his initial statement, Rabada made it clear: “I’ll never be Mr-I-Apologise too much. But I’ll never condone that action.”

Looking Ahead, Not Back

Now back in South Africa’s squad for the WTC final, Rabada insists he’s focused on cricket and learning from the episode. “People will have their opinions. I can live with that,” he said.

Despite the controversy, his admission and cooperation reportedly led to a more lenient sentence — and with that behind him, Rabada is ready to turn the spotlight back on cricket.
