Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has openly criticized the Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) reliance on maintaining a left-right batting combination, calling it a failed tactic that has cost them crucial games in IPL 2025. His sharp comments came after KKR’s 39-run loss to Gujarat Titans at Eden Gardens.
Who Is KKR’s Main Player? Kaif Asks
In a video shared on social media, Kaif slammed the team’s decision-making, especially the demotion of Rinku Singh—last season’s standout finisher—to No. 8 in a recent match against Lucknow Super Giants.
“First decide who your main player is – is it Rinku, Russell, Iyer, or Moeen? Don’t confuse roles in the name of left-right,” Kaif said.
Kaif Questions Rahane’s Slow Batting Approach
Kaif was also unimpressed with Ajinkya Rahane and Venkatesh Iyer’s slow scoring during the middle overs in the Gujarat game. The pair added only 41 runs in 36 balls, which Kaif believes stalled the chase.
“They should’ve sent the big hitters early. Play natural cricket. Don’t block the innings with cautious partnerships,” he noted.
Left-Right Combination Blamed for Team’s Downfall
Kaif believes the obsession with alternating left- and right-handers has repeatedly backfired for KKR. “Lefty-righty ke chakkar mein naiya dub gayi KKR ki (KKR’s ship sank due to the left-right strategy),” he quipped.
De Kock’s Dropping Also Questioned
The former cricketer also questioned the decision to drop Quinton de Kock despite his match-winning knock against Rajasthan Royals. “Why drop De Kock after he won you a game? Just because he’s a left-hander?” Kaif asked.
KKR are currently struggling at the lower half of the IPL 2025 table, and Kaif’s comments underline the growing concern over inconsistent decision-making in the camp.
