Kapil Dev Questions ECB’s Decision to Rename Pataudi Trophy

Kapil Dev Questions Rename of Pataudi Trophy

Kapil Dev has expressed surprise over the England and Wales Cricket Board’s decision to rename the historic Pataudi Trophy as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The former Indian captain called the move “strange” and admitted it felt odd to see such a change without wider consultation. The Pataudi Trophy had been the official title of the India-England Test series played in England since 2007.

The decision by the ECB has stirred mixed reactions across the cricket world. The trophy was originally named in honor of Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, one of India’s most respected captains, who played for both India and in the English county circuit. His father, Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, also captained India and had a deep-rooted connection with English cricket.

Widespread Criticism and Kapil’s Honest Reaction

Speaking at an event marking the 41st anniversary of his famous 175* knock against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup, Kapil Dev shared his honest reaction to the renaming. He said it felt unusual, adding that while changes happen in cricket, such moves can still be surprising.

The new Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy pays tribute to England pacer James Anderson and Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar. However, it has drawn criticism from many fans and cricket veterans who believe the legacy of the Pataudi family should have been preserved. Reports suggest that even Sachin Tendulkar and ICC chairman Jay Shah made efforts to convince the ECB to reconsider, but the board has not reversed its decision.

To retain part of the Pataudi legacy, the ECB has introduced the Pataudi Medal for Excellence. This individual award will be presented to the winning captain of the series, maintaining a symbolic connection to the original name.

India Begins New Test Chapter Under Gill’s Leadership

As the India-England series begins on June 20 in Leeds, it also marks the beginning of a new era for Indian Test cricket. With senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retiring from the format, the spotlight now shifts to Shubman Gill, who takes over as the Test captain.

Kapil Dev had a word of advice for the young leader, urging him to play freely and without pressure. He emphasized the importance of expressing oneself on the field over chasing expectations.

India will aim to win their first Test series in England since 2007, with new leadership and a fresh start under the renamed trophy.
