In a remarkable moment during the Delhi Capitals (DC) vs Rajasthan Royals (RR) IPL 2025 match on April 16, KL Rahul’s sharp observation and calm decision-making helped RR batter Dhruv Jurel survive after being given out. The incident unfolded in the 16th over of RR’s chase, where Jurel’s fate hung in the balance, but Rahul’s quick thinking turned the tide.
The Incident: KL Rahul Signals for DRS
In the 16th over of RR’s 189-run chase, Kuldeep Yadav bowled a googly to Jurel, who attempted a sweep. The ball turned and struck Jurel’s pads, leading to a huge appeal from the DC players. The umpire raised his finger, giving Jurel out. However, as soon as the decision was made, KL Rahul, who was fielding at short leg, instinctively walked up to Kuldeep and shook his head while signalling to him that the ball had struck Jurel’s forearm.
This silent communication from Rahul made Jurel confident that the ball hadn’t hit his pads, but his forearm. Jurel immediately took the cue and signalled for a DRS review. Upon reviewing the footage, the third umpire confirmed that the ball had indeed hit Jurel’s thigh and would have missed the stumps. The decision was overturned, and Jurel survived.
The Match Continues
The overturned decision didn’t stop Jurel from pushing RR close to victory. Needing just 2 runs off the last ball of Mitchell Starc’s over, Jurel’s valiant knock of 26 off 17 balls was cut short when he was run out attempting a second run, leveling the scores at 188 each for both teams. The game was headed into a Super Over.
