Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, both retired from Tests and T20Is, are keen to focus on ODIs in hopes of ending their careers with a 2027 World Cup win. However, their immediate ODI future is under discussion as reports suggest October’s series against Australia could be their last.
The Vijay Hazare Trophy dilemma
The BCCI reportedly wants both players to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy to remain match-fit for ODI selection. Kohli last played the tournament in 2010, while Rohit’s last appearance came in 2018. However, with their stature in world cricket and India’s busy schedule, this expectation may not be realistic.
India’s upcoming ODI schedule
India will play nine ODIs in the 2025-26 season before the Vijay Hazare Trophy starts in late December. Matches against Australia in October and South Africa in November will be followed by a short break before the New Zealand series in January. Given that the ODI squad will likely be announced in late December, there may be little opportunity for Kohli and Rohit to play in the domestic competition.
Why BCCI’s plan may not work
If Kohli and Rohit perform strongly in the ODIs against Australia and South Africa, the need for Vijay Hazare Trophy participation may become irrelevant. On the other hand, if their form dips, there’s uncertainty about whether they would commit to playing multiple domestic games in a tight international schedule.
