Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has backed young IPL sensation Sai Sudharsan to bat at No. 3 for India in the upcoming Test series against England. With Virat Kohli’s retirement creating a major void and Shubman Gill likely to move to No. 4, India is actively searching for a solid top-order solution.
Speaking on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast, Clarke called Sudharsan a “superstar” and advised the Indian team management to hand the youngster his Test debut in England.
“To me, this kid is a superstar. Sai Sudharsan is technically sound, mentally ready, and looks like a proper No. 3 in Test cricket,” Clarke said.
Sudharsan’s Rise in IPL 2025
Sudharsan enjoyed a breakout IPL 2025 season, clinching the Orange Cap with 759 runs in 15 matches, including one century and six fifties. His average of 54.21 and strike rate of 156.17 made him one of the most consistent and fearless batters of the tournament. He was also crowned Emerging Player of the Season.
Clarke noted that such consistent form and technique make him ready for the red-ball challenge in England.
“He can walk in straight to bat at No. 3. He’s got all the shots and a cool head,” Clarke added.
Karun Nair’s Strong Claim
While Clarke rooted for Sudharsan, Karun Nair has also made a strong case for the No. 3 spot. The experienced batter, who is making a comeback after years in the wilderness, scored a double century in India A’s first unofficial Test against England Lions.
However, with IPL commitments delaying the arrival of players like Gill and Sudharsan, the intra-squad game might be the only opportunity for final selection decisions before the first Test at Leeds.
