As talks intensify around the retirement of Indian cricket icons like Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, former England all-rounder Moeen Ali has shared a blunt and honest take on the matter. Speaking to The Indian Express, Moeen advised senior players to self-reflect on their performances and not hold on simply because of their reputation.
Moeen’s Honest Opinion on Ageing Cricketers
In recent weeks, cricket fans across India have been debating whether Rohit Sharma, 38, and MS Dhoni, 43, should step aside for younger talent. Dhoni, battling injuries and diminished form, has struggled to recreate his finishing magic for Chennai Super Kings, while Rohit has posted low scores in his recent IPL outings after a decent Champions Trophy final.
Moeen, who has himself transitioned out of international cricket but still plays franchise leagues, stated:
“You shouldn’t just hold on because you’re a big name or have a massive following. Don’t stay just for personal goals. Be realistic—are you still contributing to the team?”
Rohit and Dhoni: Under the Retirement Spotlight
Rohit Sharma has scores of 0, 8, 13, and 17 in IPL 2025 after a strong 50 in the Champions Trophy final.
MS Dhoni, now 43, has been struggling with a knee injury and is clearly past his prime.
Despite form concerns, Rohit has shown no signs of retiring, and he is expected to lead India in the upcoming England tour.
Moeen on the Fine Line Between Staying and Stepping Aside
Moeen added that if younger players are performing better, it’s important for senior players to be honest with themselves:
“It doesn’t mean younger players are better overall, but if they’re playing better right now, you need to be realistic.”
Franchise vs International Retirement – A Different Game
Moeen also explained that stepping away from international cricket is a much tougher decision than leaving franchise cricket. Having retired from England duties after the T20 World Cup, he continues to play in IPL, SA20, The Hundred, and ILT20.
“Franchise cricket is different. Retiring from international cricket is much harder. But that’s where the tough calls matter more.”
