Moeen Ali: Kohli’s Retirement Is a Big Blow to Test Cricket

Moeen Ali: Kohli's Test Exit a Blow Like Sachin’s

Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali has called Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket a massive blow to the format, comparing his impact on Indian cricket to that of Sachin Tendulkar. Moeen also said India’s loss will be England’s gain in the upcoming five-Test series, where the Men in Blue will tour England without both Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

“After Sachin, Kohli Was the Guy”: Moeen Praises Kohli’s Legacy

Speaking to Sky Sports, Moeen Ali reflected on Kohli’s global influence, saying:

“After Sachin, he was the guy everybody came to watch. He filled out stadiums. Amazing record, a brilliant player to watch. A massive blow to Test cricket.”

Moeen credited Kohli as a true ambassador of Test cricket, someone who kept the format alive with his energy, competitive spirit, and style of play.

“He was the one guy that always pushed the format. Amazing player, amazing career.”

India Without Kohli & Rohit — A Big Boost for England

With Rohit Sharma also retiring from Test cricket, Moeen believes the absence of both veterans is a major advantage for England.

“It’s a massive boost for England. Two top players who’ve toured England multiple times — their experience is huge,” Moeen noted.

He recalled Rohit’s standout performance during the 2021 England tour, where he scored 368 runs at an average of 52.57 and solidified his status as a dependable overseas batter.

“Rohit played really well last time. Both have been captains and are strong characters. Big loss for India.”

Young Gill Faces Uphill Task in Englan

With Shubman Gill likely to lead India in the upcoming series, Moeen said the challenge will be tough for the young squad, especially in swing-friendly English conditions.

Gill, who averages just 29 in away Tests, will have to not only anchor the batting but also manage a team in transition, missing its two most experienced batters.

As India enters a new Test era, Moeen’s words underscore the void left behind by Kohli and Rohit — two legends who defined a generation of red-ball cricket.
