Mohammed Shami Blasts Retirement Rumors Ahead of England Tour

Shami Slams Report Hinting at His Test Retirement

Veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has fired back at media speculation suggesting his imminent retirement from Test cricket, calling the reports baseless and misleading. With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma recently retiring from the format, rumors began swirling that Shami might follow suit.

But the 34-year-old seamer took to Instagram to share his frustration, slamming the article and those behind it for spreading what he described as “today’s worst story.”

Shami Responds to Claims on Instagram

A screenshot of the article was posted by Shami with a fiery caption:

“Very well done. Also, start counting the days left to say ‘adieu’ to your job, then see ours later. People like you have ruined our future. Try saying nice things sometimes, too. Today’s worst story, sorry.”

The report in question suggested that Shami’s availability for the England Test series, starting June 20, hinges on his ability to bowl long spells — a concern after his prolonged injury break.

Injury Comeback and Recent Form

Shami has not featured in a Test match since the WTC Final in 2023 against Australia, following which he suffered an injury that ruled him out for months. He made a strong return in the domestic Ranji Trophy for Bengal, where he picked up seven wickets against Madhya Pradesh.

In 2025, Shami has played across formats, featuring for India in the Champions Trophy-winning campaign and representing Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2025, proving his fitness and form.

Despite these appearances, some reports continued to question whether Shami could endure the rigors of red-ball cricket in England, even hinting at possible retirement — claims that Shami has now directly refuted.

Test Record and India’s Current Transition

Mohammed Shami has been one of India’s most reliable pacers in Tests, having taken 229 wickets in 64 matches at an impressive average of 27.1, including six five-wicket hauls.

With Ravichandran Ashwin, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma stepping away from Tests, the Indian team is going through a transitional phase. Shami’s presence and experience will be crucial in the upcoming England series.

Shami’s strong reaction not only dismisses retirement rumors but also underlines his intent to remain a key part of India’s Test setup — a statement of defiance from a pacer who still has plenty to offer.
