MS Dhoni Becomes Oldest Player to Win IPL Player of the Match Award at 43, Breaks 11-Year Record

MS Dhoni Sets IPL Record as Oldest Player of the Match at 43

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend MS Dhoni has made history once again in the Indian Premier League (IPL). At the age of 43 years and 280 days, Dhoni became the oldest player ever to win the Player of the Match (POTM) award in IPL history, surpassing a record held for over a decade by Pravin Tambe.

The milestone came during CSK’s thrilling last-over victory against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2025 at the Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow. Dhoni played a match-winning cameo, smashing 26 runs off just 11 balls, helping CSK successfully chase down the 167-run target and claim their second win of the season.

Dhoni Breaks Pravin Tambe’s Long-Standing Record

Previously, the record for the oldest POTM winner belonged to Pravin Tambe, who received the award in IPL 2014 at the age of 42 years and 208 days while playing for Rajasthan Royals. Dhoni’s new record now stands at 43 years and 280 days, making him the first player ever to win the award at age 43 in the league’s history.

“Why Are They Giving Me the Award?” – Dhoni Credits Noor Ahmad

Despite receiving the POTM award, Dhoni humbly suggested that Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmad was more deserving of the honour. “Even today I was like – why are they giving me the award? Noor bowled really well,” Dhoni said at the post-match presentation.

Noor delivered an economical and impactful spell during the middle overs, playing a crucial role in keeping LSG’s total in check.

Dhoni Urges CSK Batters to Step Up

Speaking after the game, Dhoni praised the bowling unit but admitted that CSK’s batting needs improvement to climb up the IPL 2025 points table.

“As a bowling unit, we’ve done well. As a batting unit, we can do better,” Dhoni said.
“Roles and responsibilities – that’s what we talk about. If you get off to a good start and you’re someone who can bat through the innings, then why not?”

He also praised Shaik Rasheed, the young batter who impressed with his stroke play and composure during the innings.
