Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) IPL 2025 campaign took another hit on Sunday as they suffered a heavy nine-wicket defeat against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium. Despite a recent victory over Lucknow Super Giants, CSK’s hopes of a turnaround were dashed by a clinical performance from Mumbai. Rohit Sharma’s spectacular knock of 70 runs off 44 balls led Mumbai to victory, with 26 balls to spare.
Dhoni’s Animated Discussion with Umpire
CSK’s captain, MS Dhoni, was visibly annoyed after the loss. Instead of heading straight to the Mumbai Indians players for the customary post-match handshake, Dhoni walked up to the umpire and engaged in an animated conversation. While the exact details of their exchange remained unclear due to the lack of audio, the clip went viral on social media, with fans speculating about what frustrated the CSK captain.
Where Did Chennai Falter?
Reflecting on the match, Dhoni admitted that CSK had failed to accelerate during the crucial slog overs, which led to them posting a below-par total of 177. He pointed out that CSK had missed the opportunity to exploit the middle overs when the dew was expected to play a role in the second innings.
“We knew dew would come in the second half, and we were in a position to capitalize on the middle overs. I felt that we should have accelerated earlier, especially when Jasprit Bumrah started his death bowling. Even if Bumrah went for a few runs, we needed to capitalize at that moment. 175 is not a par score with dew around,” Dhoni stated in the post-match presentation.
CSK’s Struggles Continue
With this loss, CSK remains at the bottom of the points table, having won just two of their first eight matches. Their poor performance in the death overs and an inability to push the total to a competitive score cost them the match.
Next, CSK will return home, where they will face Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 25 and Punjab Kings on April 30. Dhoni and his team will need to find a way to bounce back if they are to have any chance of qualifying for the IPL 2025 playoffs.
