In a shocking move, Nicholas Pooran, the former West Indies T20I captain, announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 29. The decision has left cricket fans and the West Indies cricket fraternity stunned, especially with just eight months to go for the T20 World Cup 2026.
Pooran made the announcement through an emotional statement on Instagram, calling the decision “difficult” but necessary after much thought and reflection.
Pooran’s Statement: A Heartfelt Goodbye
“To the cricket public, after much thought and reflection, I’ve decided to announce my retirement from international cricket,” Pooran wrote.
“Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field… it’s hard to put into words what that truly means to me.”
Pooran thanked his teammates, family, and passionate West Indian fans for their constant support throughout his journey.
“Though this international chapter of my career closes, my love for West Indies Cricket will never fade.”
Career Overview and Legacy
Pooran made his international debut in 2016 against Pakistan in a T20I and later played his first ODI in 2019. Over the years, he featured in:
- 106 ODIs
- 61 T20Is
- Over 4000 international runs
He also captained West Indies in white-ball formats and was the team’s highest run-scorer in T20 internationals.
After a disappointing 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, Pooran stepped down from captaincy but remained a core member of the squad. His last international appearance came in December 2024 against Bangladesh.
IPL Form & Recent Absence
Recently, Pooran played for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025, scoring moderate runs. Days before his retirement, he had already opted out of the white-ball series against England, citing the need for rest.
