Gautam Gambhir, India’s newly appointed head coach, is facing growing scrutiny after a string of disappointing results in Test cricket, despite early success in white-ball formats. Former cricketer Aakash Chopra minced no words as he called for accountability following India’s five-wicket defeat to England at Headingley, led by new captain Shubman Gill.
India’s Red-Ball Struggles Continue
Since Gambhir’s appointment, India have:
- ❌ Lost Test series to New Zealand (0-3) and Australia (1-3)
- ❌ Started the England tour with a loss
- ✅ Won a lone series against Bangladesh
- 📉 Won just 3 out of their last 10 Tests
Chopra acknowledged India’s white-ball success under Gambhir, including the 2025 Champions Trophy title, but pointed out that Test cricket tells a different story.
“There is a lot of pressure on Gautam Gambhir… He has been losing and losing,” said Chopra.
Shubman Gill: Too Early to Judge?
The former opener also urged patience for Gill, who recently took over Test captaincy after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from the format.
“Shubman is new to captaincy. It will take him some time to understand. But questions must be asked of the head coach,” Chopra explained.
Everything Asked Has Been Given’: No More Excuses
Aakash Chopra emphasized that Gambhir now has full support from the BCCI, and that the selectors have delivered everything requested by the team management.
“Whatever Gambhir has asked for — players, resources — everything has been given. Now, results are expected. There is no excuse.”
He warned that if the England Test series ends poorly, Gambhir’s red-ball credentials will be under serious question.
“If the England series doesn’t go too well, there will be a question mark. The pressure is already mounting.”
Summary
Gautam Gambhir finds himself in a crucial phase as Test match failures threaten to undo his early gains as India head coach. With backing from the board and selectors, expectations are high — and accountability is inevitable if results don’t improve.
