Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) Director of Cricket Mo Bobat opened up about the confusion and uncertainty surrounding the sudden suspension of IPL 2025 due to escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan. The tournament was paused on May 9, the day RCB was scheduled to face Lucknow Super Giants.
Speaking on RCB Bold Diaries, Bobat described the mood within the camp as “quite chaotic,” with players and staff unsure of the situation unfolding in Dharamsala.
“It was a pretty eventful evening. We were on the bus after practice watching the Punjab vs DC game. Suddenly, we saw the floodlights go out and players walk off. We had no idea what was happening until we got back to the hotel,” Bobat recalled.
Uncertainty and Rumours Spread Fast
The turning point came when the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match was halted mid-innings due to a sudden blackout — later revealed to be part of an emergency protocol after drone alerts nearby. That incident triggered panic and rumors among IPL teams, with many fearing the tournament would be called off entirely.
“That night was full of speculation. By the next morning, we were informed that our game was off and the IPL was suspended for a period. At that time, we didn’t expect the conflict to resolve so quickly,” Bobat added.
Player Safety a Priority
Bobat said RCB’s management, including head coach Andy Flower, immediately prioritized the safety and comfort of both Indian and overseas players. Players were offered the option to return home.
“We sat with each overseas player and asked for their preference. Many chose to go home during the uncertainty but expressed full commitment to return when the IPL resumed,” he said.
Rapid Response Once IPL Resumed
When the ceasefire was announced and IPL 2025 was cleared to resume on May 17, the RCB team had to quickly coordinate with international cricket boards including the ECB, Cricket Australia, and Cricket South Africa to facilitate player returns.
“We had video calls with overseas players, shared the updated schedule, and detailed security protocols. It was important that they felt safe and confident returning,” said Bobat.
What’s Next for RCB?
RCB currently stands on the brink of qualification, needing just one more win to confirm their IPL 2025 playoff berth. They resume their campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders on May 18 at home.
