Rishabh Pant’s heroic innings in the Manchester Test has sparked widespread admiration, with England legend David Gower comparing the Indian wicketkeeper-batter to all-time greats Brian Lara and Gary Sobers. Despite fracturing his toe on Day 1, Pant returned to the crease on Day 2 and scored a gritty 54 off 75 balls. However, he didn’t take the gloves for the rest of the match, with Dhruv Jurel stepping in as wicketkeeper.
Gower, speaking to PTI, praised Pant’s fearless and unorthodox batting style. While talking about the grace of left-handed players like Sobers and Lara, he said Pant stands out for his unpredictability and ability to do the unimaginable on the field. Gower also lauded England’s Ben Duckett, but singled out Pant as “absolutely brilliant” and “extraordinary.”
David Gower Saddened by Pant’s Injury Blow
The former England captain expressed deep disappointment at Pant’s injury. “I’m actually so sorry that he’s injured. There is a man who does the things others only dream of. You cannot replicate what he does,” Gower said.
He emphasized that Pant’s unique approach makes him irreplaceable and admired worldwide. “You cannot ask a young player to try and bat like Pant—it could ruin their career. But when you see him in action, you can’t help but watch in awe,” he added.
According to reports, Pant has been advised to rest for six weeks, though the BCCI is yet to issue an official update. Fans now hope for a quick recovery, as India will miss his explosive presence in the crucial fifth Test.
