Rishabh Pant, bought for a massive ₹27 crore by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), is under fire for his poor performance in IPL 2025. With just 128 runs in 11 matches at an average of 12.80 and a strike rate below 100, Pant has been one of the tournament’s biggest disappointments.
Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has not only questioned Pant’s form but also highlighted his visible frustration and animated reactions on the field, especially during the match against Punjab Kings in Dharamsala.
Aakash Chopra: “That’s Not the Captain You Want”
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra expressed concern over Pant’s body language as captain.
“It seemed like he was extremely disturbed and frustrated. That’s not the captain you want,” Chopra said.
“One shouldn’t come to know from the captain’s face that he is angry. But the anger was visible, which is not a great thing,” he added.
Pant has also been seen in serious discussions with LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka post matches, sparking speculation about internal issues within the camp.
LSG’s Slim Playoff Hopes Hang by a Thread
Currently seventh on the points table with 10 points from 11 matches, LSG need to win all three of their remaining games to stand a chance at playoff qualification. Even then, net run rate and other match results may decide their fate.
With Gujarat Titans, RCB, and Punjab Kings already qualified, LSG are now in a three-way battle with Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals for the final playoff spot.
Chopra summed it up bluntly:
“Pant is a good player, no doubt. But he hasn’t done well this year.”
What Lies Ahead for Pant and LSG?
As LSG prepare to face SunRisers Hyderabad, Pant’s leadership, form, and mental state will be under heavy scrutiny. A loss would mark their official elimination from IPL 2025, raising more questions about the future of Pant as a captain in franchise cricket.
