As India prepares for a new era in Test cricket starting June 20 in England, Rishabh Pant finds himself in a dual role—India’s explosive middle-order batter and now, its new vice-captain. But not everyone wants him to think about that second title.
Former India batter and Delhi Capitals head coach Hemang Badani has offered strong advice: “Rishabh, tu apna game khel.” In short, forget the leadership responsibilities—just play like Pant.
‘Don’t Let the Vice-Captaincy Change You’
In an exclusive chat with Hindustan Times, Badani stressed that India head coach Gautam Gambhir must talk to Pant and give him the freedom that made him successful.
“Don’t think too hard about being vice-captain. There’s a reason he got the role — it’s because of his fearless, attacking approach.”
Pant is set to bat at No. 5, a slot that becomes critical when India faces the second new ball. Badani believes a cautious Pant would be a mistake.
Leadership Role vs. Natural Instinct
Pant’s explosive numbers in SENA countries — 1681 runs at 37.81, including centuries in Australia, England, and South Africa — prove his effectiveness. Most notably, his 146 at Edgbaston in 2022 helped India out of a crisis.
Yet, with the vice-captaincy comes pressure. Badani wants Gambhir to intervene early to ensure Pant’s mindset stays aggressive:
“He was picked for how he plays. Don’t change that. Let him be the same Pant who sends balls flying over roofs in practice.”
India’s Post-Kohli Era Hinges on Pant’s Fire
With Kohli, Rohit, and Ashwin gone, this Indian Test team needs leaders who lead by doing. Pant’s performance with the bat will be as important as his influence in the dressing room.
Badani warns that the only danger is if the management tries to mold him into something he’s not:
“He has the right balance already. Let him attack. Let him unsettle the bowlers. That’s how India wins.”
