India’s star batter Rishabh Pant was forced to retire hurt on Day 1 of the fourth Test against England after suffering a toe injury. Pant had just started to accelerate India’s innings, forming a 72-run stand with Sai Sudharsan, when the ball hit his right toe during a reverse sweep attempt in the 68th over. The ball deflected off the bat and struck him hard, leaving him in visible pain.
Pant, who had walked in after Shubman Gill’s dismissal, was batting on 37 off 48 balls, including two boundaries and a six. He was immediately taken to the medical center for scans, leaving Indian fans and cricket pundits worried.
England Legends Show Support for Pant
Former England captain Nasser Hussain expressed his concern on Sky Sports, calling it a major blow for India. “This game needs Pant and the series has been blessed by having him in it,” he said, praising Pant’s presence and impact.
Stuart Broad echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing how Pant’s explosive batting adds immense value to world cricket. He hoped the injury was just a bruise, adding that the medical team would be closely monitoring it overnight.
Pant’s exit came as a setback for India, who ended the day at 264/4. The left-hander is currently the second-highest run-scorer in the series with 462 runs, including two centuries and four fifties. He had already been managing a finger injury from the previous Test, which forced him to hand over wicketkeeping duties to Dhruv Jurel.
As the series intensifies, all eyes will be on Pant’s fitness update ahead of Day 2.
