Rohit Sharma appeared visibly emotional as he said goodbye to his Mumbai Indians (MI) teammates and staff after their heartbreaking Qualifier 2 defeat to Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2025. MI’s dream of a sixth title was crushed by a stunning 87* from PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer, who chased down 204 with ease at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
A viral video showed Rohit parting ways with Arjun Tendulkar and other MI players at the airport, sparking speculation about his future with the franchise.
A Season of Highs and Heartbreaks
MI began the season poorly with just one win in their first four matches but mounted a sensational comeback after a dramatic final-over win against Delhi Capitals. With key contributions from Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and skipper Hardik Pandya, they racked up six consecutive victories to secure a playoff spot.
Rohit was instrumental in MI’s resurgence. His 76 against CSK* and 81 vs GT in the Eliminator were vintage performances that rekindled hopes of a title. But in the Qualifier, he managed just 8 runs before falling early.
Jayawardene Reflects with Pride Despite Loss
MI’s head coach Mahela Jayawardene admitted the team may have fallen short with the bat despite a competitive score of 200+. “The execution was not up to our standards,” he said, highlighting a mid-innings collapse as the turning point.
Yet, Jayawardene expressed pride in how the team bounced back mid-season. “The way we regrouped after the start we had—there’s a lot to take pride in.”
