Despite their IPL 2025 playoff hopes fading following a crushing 100-run defeat to Mumbai Indians (MI), Rajasthan Royals (RR) fielding coach Dishant Yagnik remains positive about the team’s future. With only six points from 11 games, RR is now out of the playoff race and sits in eighth place. However, Yagnik defended the team’s strategy of backing young, homegrown talent, emphasizing the Royals’ belief in creating stars rather than buying them.
The Philosophy of Building Superstars
Speaking after the loss to MI, Yagnik addressed the criticism regarding RR’s decision to let go of big-name players like Jos Buttler and Trent Boult. He made it clear that the franchise does not focus on picking superstars from the auction but instead works towards developing them. “Whenever a new player arrives, he is not a star, but he is made into one,” Yagnik stated. “We don’t buy superstars, we make superstars, and this is our tagline.”
The Royals’ faith in youth is evident with players like Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who became the youngest IPL centurion earlier this season. Despite his duck against MI, Yagnik reiterated his belief in Suryavanshi and other young talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal. “Look at Vaibhav Suryavanshi, everyone was happy for him when he was batting against Gujarat Titans,” Yagnik said. “In time to come, these guys will become stars and we believe in that.”
Rajasthan Royals’ Setback Against Mumbai Indians
RR’s loss to MI exposed several weaknesses, especially their batting struggles, as the team was bowled out for 117 while chasing 217. Despite a promising start, openers Suryavanshi and Jaiswal failed to fire, and the middle order couldn’t build a strong foundation. Yagnik acknowledged the superior skills of MI’s players, such as Rohit Sharma, Surya Kumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya, who made the difference in the game. “When someone’s skillset weighs heavy on your plans, you have to give credit,” Yagnik said, recognizing MI’s performance.
The Importance of Team Dynamics Over Individual Glory
Yagnik’s comments highlighted the importance of team dynamics over individual superstars. Despite recent fielding errors and dropped catches, Yagnik pointed out that RR’s fielding record has historically been strong, with the team consistently ranking in the top three from 2018 to 2023. “It happens in every franchise that you have one season where things don’t go your way,” Yagnik reflected. He emphasized the need for continued preparation and belief in their young players, even in challenging times.
Looking Ahead: RR’s Future Strategy
As RR faces a second consecutive season without a playoff spot, the franchise will need to assess its strategy for future auctions. While Yagnik remains committed to developing young talent, the team’s failure to secure a strong bowling attack this season may require a shift in focus for upcoming years. The team will need to balance its focus on young players with the need for seasoned, match-winning bowlers to support the batting lineup.
