Shreyas Iyer Asked to Drop Glenn Maxwell as Punjab Kings Look to Reclaim Winning Momentum in IPL 2025

Iyer Told to Drop Maxwell as PBKS Eye Comeback

Punjab Kings (PBKS), after a solid start to their IPL 2025 campaign, are now struggling with inconsistency. With two losses in their last three matches, the Shreyas Iyer-led side is under pressure to bounce back as they face defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

One of the key concerns for PBKS has been the underwhelming form of Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell. Former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull has publicly suggested that Maxwell should be dropped from the playing XI due to his poor batting form.

Simon Doull on Glenn Maxwell: “Time for a Change”

Speaking ahead of the KKR clash, Doull criticized Maxwell’s string of low scores and lack of impact with the bat.

“I think Maxwell has had his run. Just the way he’s getting out would frustrate me as a coach. Omarzai or Josh Inglis could be better options right now,” said Doull.

Maxwell has failed to deliver consistent performances, and while he has contributed with the ball in a few games, it hasn’t been enough to justify his spot in a team that’s desperate to return to winning ways.

Lockie Ferguson Injury Adds to PBKS Woes

Punjab Kings have also been hit by the loss of Kiwi pacer Lockie Ferguson, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to injury.

Doull pointed out the significance of Ferguson’s absence:

“It’s a big loss. He bowled just two deliveries in the last match before walking off. His pace in the middle overs would’ve made a difference.”

With Ferguson out, PBKS will need to rethink their bowling combination as well, potentially giving more overs to Marcus Stoinis or relying on domestic pace options.

What’s Next for Punjab Kings?

The upcoming match against KKR is critical for Punjab Kings to regain momentum and keep their playoff hopes alive. With questions around team selection and key players underperforming, skipper Shreyas Iyer and the coaching staff have some tough calls to make.

The focus will be on balancing experience with current form — and making bold decisions that could help the team get back on track in the second half of IPL 2025.
