As the BCCI reportedly eyes potential successors to Rohit Sharma, one name gaining momentum is Shreyas Iyer. The stylish middle-order batter has broken his silence on the India captaincy chatter, expressing his love for leadership and his belief in rising during high-pressure moments.
Currently leading Sobo Mumbai Falcons into the semifinals of the T20 Mumbai League, Iyer has once again proven his captaincy mettle, adding to his growing resume after steering Delhi Capitals to the IPL final in 2020 and guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title.
“Captaincy Brings Maturity, I Embrace It” – Iyer
“It brings in a lot of maturity and responsibility. I’ve been captaining since I was 22. I love the challenge and embrace it,” Iyer said during the Mumbai T20 League.
With Rohit nearing 40 and a generational shift already underway, Iyer’s strong white-ball form and leadership record are making a compelling case. A senior BCCI official reportedly confirmed that Iyer is now officially in the race to lead India’s ODI and T20I teams in the near future.
Resilient Return After Setbacks
Despite a back injury and a surprise exclusion from BCCI’s central contracts, Iyer bounced back with a stellar season for Punjab Kings, followed by his T20 Mumbai League form. He credits his mindset for staying grounded and using the crowd’s energy as motivation.
“I keep telling myself I want the crowd to cheer my name. That keeps me going,” he said.
Iyer, 30, also shared how playing alongside old friends and teammates in the T20 Mumbai League brings joy and familiarity.
“There are familiar faces here from my school and club cricket days. It feels great to be back.”
