Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer has made history by becoming the first captain to lead three different IPL teams to the finals. After a brilliant unbeaten 87 in Qualifier 2 against Mumbai Indians, the right-hander has not only taken PBKS to their second-ever IPL final but has also sparked discussions about his future as India’s captain across formats.
Robin Uthappa’s Big Statement
Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa praised Iyer’s leadership and claimed that he is destined to lead India in all formats. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Uthappa wrote:
“I’ve said this time and again and I’ll say it AGAIN!! Iyer will captain India in multiple formats!! He has to!! He’s that good.”
Iyer’s calm decision-making, tactical awareness, and consistent batting throughout IPL 2025 have drawn widespread attention.
Stellar Performance in IPL 2025
Shreyas Iyer has been a standout performer in IPL 2025, scoring 603 runs in 16 matches at an average of 54.82 and a strike rate of 175.80. His match-winning knock of 87* off 41 balls against Mumbai Indians sealed PBKS’s place in the final.
Having been bought for ₹26.75 crore in the auction, Iyer has lived up to the price tag with both the bat and captaincy. He has also benefited from a strong partnership with PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting, with whom he reached the IPL 2020 final while playing for Delhi Capitals.
A Leader of Three IPL Finalists
Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy record is unmatched:
- Delhi Capitals (2020 Finalist)
- Kolkata Knight Riders (2024 Champion)
- Punjab Kings (2025 Finalist)
Despite leading KKR to the title in 2024, he was not retained, and many felt mentor Gautam Gambhir got more credit for the success. Now, with PBKS on the verge of their first-ever IPL title, Iyer has another chance to prove his mettle in the final against RCB on June 3 at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
