Shubman Gill Gets Gavaskar’s Vote of Confidence as Test Captaincy Rumors Rise

Shubman Gill Backed by Gavaskar for Test Captaincy

With Rohit Sharma retiring from Test cricket, all eyes are on Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill — and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar believes he’s ready. Speaking after GT’s dominant win over Delhi Capitals, Gavaskar heaped praise on Gill’s calm leadership and selfless attitude, calling it the “hallmark of a true leader.”

A Leader Who Uplifts Others

Gavaskar noted how Gill consistently shifts the spotlight to his teammates. “A true leader never seeks the spotlight. He takes joy in his teammates receiving the recognition. That’s what Shubman has done brilliantly this season,” he said on JioStar.

Gill, who has scored 601 runs in 12 matches this season, played a vital role alongside Sai Sudharsan (108*) in chasing down 200 runs without losing a wicket — an IPL record.

Supporting From the Shadows

The cricketing great highlighted a key moment during the match when Kuldeep Yadav troubled Sudharsan. “From the non-striker’s end, Shubman was constantly encouraging him… making small movements with his gloves, subtle cues. That’s leadership,” said Gavaskar.

Rising as India’s Next Test Captain?

With India set to begin a five-match Test series against England next month, the 24-year-old Gill is widely speculated to take over the red-ball reins. Having led GT to the top of the IPL 2025 points table and shown maturity well beyond his years, Gill may well be ready for the biggest challenge of his career — leading India in Tests.
