Shubman Gill’s Outburst Sparks Tension on Day 3 at Lord’s

Sunil Gavaskar reacts to Shubman Gill’s angry outburst

The third day of the Lord’s Test between India and England ended with high drama. Indian captain Shubman Gill lost his cool during England’s second innings, directing harsh words at Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. This heated moment came after Crawley pulled away multiple times before facing Jasprit Bumrah’s delivery, which seemed to frustrate Gill. Crawley later called the physio after being hit on the glove, further delaying the game.

Gill exchanged more words with Duckett and showed his frustration with a sarcastic clap toward the England dressing room. Bumrah soon bowled a seaming delivery that beat Crawley, ending the day’s play on a tense note.

Gavaskar Blames IPL Gap for India-England Friction

Reacting to the incident, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar offered a bold explanation. Speaking on air, he said the tension may be due to the fact that very few England players participate in the IPL. He pointed out that England stars like Joe Root and Ben Stokes chose to skip the tournament, unlike players from other nations who regularly share dressing rooms with Indians in the league.

According to Gavaskar, the IPL has helped reduce hostility between players from other countries, as they spend time together during the league. But with limited England presence in IPL 2024, the sense of familiarity is missing, possibly leading to more on-field confrontations.

At stumps on Day 3, England were 2/0 in their second innings, holding a slim 2-run lead after both teams scored 387 in their first innings. KL Rahul scored a century for India, while Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja added key runs. On the bowling front, Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer kept England in the game.
