South Africa Coach Stops Wiaan Mulder from Breaking Lara’s Record

Mulder Denied 400 by Coach to Honor Brian Lara’s Record

South African cricketer Wiaan Mulder stunned the cricketing world with a breathtaking knock of 367 not out against Zimbabwe in the second Test. But despite being just 33 runs away from surpassing Brian Lara’s all-time highest Test score of 400 not out, Mulder declared the innings at 626 for 5. This decision was not just tactical—it was also deeply respectful.

After the day’s play, Mulder revealed that South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad advised him not to chase the milestone. According to Mulder, Conrad said, “Let the legends keep the really big scores.” Mulder agreed with his coach, stating that the team already had enough runs on the board, and honoring Lara’s iconic record felt like the right thing to do.

Brian Lara, the West Indies great, remains the only cricketer to score 400 not out in a Test match, a feat he achieved against England in 2004. Mulder acknowledged Lara’s status in the game and said it was special to let someone of his stature hold onto that record.

Mulder’s Knock: A Blend of Brilliance and Humility

Mulder resumed Day 2 on 264* and reached 300 off just 297 balls—second-fastest in history after Virender Sehwag. He then raced to 367 in just 37 balls, smashing 49 fours and four sixes. Despite the scoring spree, the South African skipper chose to walk away from personal glory for the team’s benefit.

Mulder’s mental strategy involved singing “Zombie” by The Cranberries during his long stay at the crease to stay focused. “I never even dreamt of a double hundred, let alone a triple. But it’s all about putting the team in a winning position,” he said.

South Africa declared their innings with their highest Test score in nine years. Zimbabwe struggled in reply, being bowled out for 170. Mulder contributed with two wickets and a sharp catch. Test debutant Prenelan Subrayen impressed with 4 for 42. Zimbabwe’s lone fight came from Sean Williams, who scored a rapid 83 despite being unwell.

Coach Conrad praised Mulder’s maturity and described his knock as a masterclass in composure and leadership. With South Africa enforcing the follow-on and holding a massive lead, they look set for another dominant win.

Mulder’s decision may have denied cricket history a new record, but it showcased true sportsmanship and team-first spirit—values that define the greatest leaders in the game.
