Former BCCI chief selector and ex-India skipper Kris Srikkanth has raised concerns about the sudden calls to include Shubman Gill in India’s Asia Cup squad. He questioned the logic of recalling Gill—who last played a T20I in July 2024 and was not part of India’s World Cup-winning team—for the short-format tournament.
“Where does he come in suddenly?”
Srikkanth pointed out that if Gill had been a regular T20I lead, there would have been no space for players like Sai Sudharsan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, or Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Since Gill did not feature in India’s recent T20 setups or the England T20Is, Srikkanth argued there’s no clear basis for his inclusion now.
Harbhajan offers a different view
Contrasting Srikkanth’s skepticism, former spinner Harbhajan Singh urged selectors not to underestimate Gill’s T20 potential. He emphasized that Gill has the talent and temperament to excel in the shortest format, regardless of prior omission.
Selection balance remains tricky
India’s selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, face a delicate balancing act. Although Gill is a star performer in Tests and ODIs—having led India with flying colors in England—the T20 squad already boasts strong combinations. The question is whether disrupting that balance is wise or a gamble worth taking.
