In a bold revelation ahead of the World Test Championship (WTC) Final, South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje has claimed that he has been fit and available for national selection for over a year, but has repeatedly been overlooked by the selectors.
“I have been available for the last year… but they have not pressed on my button,” Nortje told Sportsboom, as quoted by Wisden.
Available But Not Selected
Nortje last played for South Africa during the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, where he was among the tournament’s standout performers. He took 15 wickets at an economy of 5.74, finishing as the joint second-highest wicket-taker alongside India’s Jasprit Bumrah.
Despite that performance, Nortje was not included in playing XIs for series after the tournament, even though he was named in some squads. His return to the national setup came during the home series against Pakistan in late 2024 — but again, he didn’t feature in any match.
Central Contract Declined
In a notable decision, Nortje declined a central contract from Cricket South Africa (CSA) last year, citing his need to manage workload and prioritize physical well-being.
“It was my decision. I just wanted to play when I knew I was ready rather than having to play every series,” he explained. “Still happy with the decision… it gives me calmness.”
CSA reportedly supported the move, recognizing Nortje’s long-term value and physical concerns. He suffered a rare stress-related back issue that contributed to his cautious approach.
Current Form and IPL Stint
The 30-year-old pacer is currently with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2025, though he has featured in only one match so far.
Nortje’s international career numbers remain impressive:
- Tests: 70 wickets in 19 matches at 26.71
- ODIs: 36 wickets in 22 matches at 27.27
- T20Is: 54 wickets in 42 matches at 19.16
What’s Next?
With the WTC Final against Australia looming, Nortje’s comments could intensify pressure on South Africa’s selectors, especially if pace becomes a key factor. While there’s no confirmation on whether he will make the final squad, his experience and skill could be a valuable asset — if selectors finally “press the button.”
