Kolkata Knight Riders’ spinner Varun Chakaravarthy has been fined 25 percent of his match fees and handed one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during KKR’s match against Chennai Super Kings at Eden Gardens on Wednesday.
Chakaravarthy was found guilty of a Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 of the IPL Code, which deals with actions that may provoke a dismissed batter. The incident took place when he dismissed CSK’s Dewald Brevis during a high-pressure chase and gave him an aggressive send-off, which was captured by the cameras and quickly drew attention.
In its official statement, the IPL said:
“Varun Chakaravarthy, Bowler, Kolkata Knight Riders has been fined 25 percent of his match fees and has also accumulated one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team’s match against Chennai Super Kings at Eden Gardens on Wednesday.
Chakaravarthy admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding.”
KKR Struggles Continue as CSK Clinch Dramatic Win
The match proved to be a crucial blow to Kolkata Knight Riders’ playoff hopes. KKR posted 179/6 after a strong start, with Andre Russell scoring 38 off 21 balls and Sunil Narine adding 26 off 17. However, Chennai’s bowling unit, led by Noor Ahmad (4/31), applied pressure in the middle overs to restrict KKR’s total.
Chasing 180, CSK stumbled early and were reduced to 60/5. But a stunning counterattack from Dewald Brevis, who smashed 52 off just 25 balls, brought them back into the game. Urvil Patel’s 31 off 11 on debut and MS Dhoni’s calm finish — sealing the match with a six and a single — ensured a two-wicket victory for Chennai Super Kings.
KKR’s Playoff Chances Hang by a Thread
Following this loss, KKR now have 11 points from 12 matches and are nearly out of playoff contention. They will have to depend on other match outcomes while also winning their remaining games to keep any hope alive.
