As the BCCI faces mounting pressure to name a new Test captain, former England skipper Michael Vaughan has made a bold suggestion—appoint Virat Kohli as skipper once again.
Vaughan Backs Kohli to Lead India in England
With Rohit Sharma announcing his retirement from Test cricket and Virat Kohli reportedly considering the same, the Indian Test squad for the five-match England series in June is still up in the air. Amid the chaos, Michael Vaughan took to social media to express his views.
“If I was India I would give the captaincy to Virat for the Test series in England… Shubman Gill can be his VC,” Vaughan posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The call to bring Kohli back into leadership highlights his experience and past success, especially in overseas conditions like England.
Kohli Yet to Confirm Test Retirement
Following Rohit’s exit, several reports suggested that Kohli has informed the BCCI of his desire to step away from Test cricket. However, the board is still hoping to convince him to stay, especially ahead of a high-stakes tour in England. The final decision from Kohli is awaited.
Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif also joined the discussion, urging Kohli not to walk away yet. In a video message, Kaif said, “Virat Kohli, India’s Babbar Sher wants to relax… He should go to England, prove his point, and end on a high note.”
Kohli’s Glorious Test Career and Leadership Legacy
Virat Kohli has been one of India’s greatest Test players. In his 14-year career, he has played 123 matches, scoring 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries.
More importantly, he holds the record for being India’s most successful Test captain, winning 40 out of the 68 matches he led.
If he does decide to step down, it would mark the end of a golden era in Indian Test cricket. With Shubman Gill being seen as a future leader, all eyes are now on the BCCI’s next move as they prepare to name the squad for the England series.
