Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday with an emotional note on Instagram, ending an illustrious red-ball career. But as per a report by The Indian Express, Kohli initially wanted to declare his retirement on May 7 — the same day Rohit Sharma stepped away from Tests. However, BCCI advised him to wait due to the ongoing military tensions during Operation Sindoor.
Operation Sindoor Delayed Kohli’s Announcement
According to reports, Kohli was ready to post his retirement statement on May 7, but India was engaged in a military conflict with Pakistan. The BCCI asked Kohli to delay his announcement so that national attention wouldn’t be diverted during a sensitive time. After a ceasefire was declared on May 10, Kohli informed BCCI and the selectors that he would make his retirement public, which he did on May 12.
Kohli’s Final Test Numbers and Future Plans
Kohli ends his Test career with 9230 runs in 123 matches at an average of 46.85. After stepping away from T20Is following India’s T20 World Cup 2024 win, he will now only play ODIs for India. His decision to quit Tests was influenced by his desire to spend more time with his family.
Family Time Was a Key Factor in His Decision
Sources say Kohli often traveled to England over the past year to be with his wife Anushka Sharma and their two children. After India’s Test series loss to Australia, the BCCI issued new rules restricting family visits. Kohli was reportedly upset by this directive.
Speaking at an IPL 2025 event, Kohli said, “The role of family is difficult to explain. After intense days, I want to come back to my family and feel normal. That’s what keeps me grounded.”
Kohli’s heartfelt remarks show that for him, cricket is a responsibility — but family is where true normalcy and joy lie.
